Maintaining Friendships #10

Creating an at-home workspace is not simply a matter of productivity or convenience. The way we arrange our environment supports the human being and their Practice. Working meditation is an important aspect of Practice. Emails, caregiving tasks, creative projects, administrative work, and paid labor are all places where attention and care are cultivated.

When setting up a place for work at home, a deeper question is being asked: How do I meet responsibility with presence?
When working from home, I used to sit at the edge of a kitchen table and then push my laptop aside each evening for meals. Work always felt present. It felt unresolved and messy. I felt perpetually rushed, as if my work never quite belonged. I began starting the day by setting up my laptop with a lamp and ringing a small singing bowl. At the end of the day, I would ring the bell and put away my laptop. With these shifts, the quality of my attention changed.
